Course Objective:

This qualification reflects the role of individuals such as production operators, working in open cut coal or metalliferous mines or quarries, who perform tasks involving a broad range of skilled applications in a varied work context, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services, or contingency measures.

Given that the key client for this qualification currently works in an open cut mining or quarrying context, the standard course duration is 6 months. This duration takes into consideration that the target clients are currently working in the industry and that a significant proportion of students will seek recognition of prior learning (RPL).

ACTA Group Course Admission Requirements:

Participants must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age;
  • Have completed Year 10 in the Australian school system or equivalent;
  • Have language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to ASCF Level 2
  • Provision of the participant’s Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Provision of Australian legal photo identification for assessment purposes and;
  • Be employed in a Surface Extraction role allowing relevant construction work to be completed, and study via a workplace supported pathway.
  • Hold CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry and current Construction Industry ‘White Card’

Upon successful completion of this Nationally Recognised Qualification, students will receive a Testamur in RII30120 Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations.

To be awarded RII30120 Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations, the following packaging rules apply:

Total number of units = 13
3 core units plus
10 elective units, of which:

  • one (1) unit must be chosen from Group A
  • one (1) unit must be chosen from Group B
  • at least three (3) units must be chosen from Group C
  • no more than (3) units may be chosen from Group D
  • no more than 2 may be from elsewhere in this or any other currently endorsed training package, or from an accredited course

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification, and contribute to a valid industry-supported vocational outcome.

The elective bank contains both licensed and non-licensed units of competency relating to high risk work in the resources and infrastructure industry. To be appointed under any statutory requirements in related roles, units of competency should be selected to meet the state/territory licensing requirements.

There are prerequisites to imported units listed in this qualification. Where a unit is imported as an elective care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisites specified are complied with.

ACTA Group’s Participant Advice and Selection Policy outlines in detail a process to be followed for granting Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer. This is supported with RPL resources available for all course units.

Participants must apply for RPL or credit transfer prior to or immediately after formal enrolment but prior to the commencement of the delivery of the units. Any RPL’s granted must be accepted and signed off by the participant.
